A shared vocabulary for the fluid layer.

Plain-language definitions for the terms that shape data-center coolant, immersion-fluid and critical-oil decisions. Each definition is scoped to avoid turning shorthand into a specification.

A

Acceptance baseline

A reference result for the named new fluid, lot and test conditions, used to make later commissioning or in-service changes comparable.

Acid number

A titration result used with suitable fluid classes to track acidic constituents and oxidation-related change. Interpretation depends on the product and method.

Anion profile

A measured pattern of selected negatively charged ions that can support formulation, contamination or inhibitor-change investigations in suitable aqueous coolants.

Chain of custody

The documented sequence that connects a labelled sample to its source, handling events, analytical work and released result.

Commissioning baseline

The first controlled condition record after a new fluid has contacted the real system, its wetted materials and its operating environment.

Conductivity

A measure of a fluid's ability to carry electrical current. In aqueous coolants it can help reveal ionic change, but it is not specific to one cause.

Corrosion products

Dissolved or particulate material associated with metal interaction. Elemental results require sample-point, material and baseline context.

Direct-to-chip cooling

A liquid-cooling architecture that transfers heat at or near processors through cold plates and a controlled coolant circuit.

PG25 program

Dissolved gas analysis (DGA)

Measurement of gases in insulating oil to support assessment of thermal or electrical fault processes in oil-filled equipment.

Freeze point

The temperature at which crystallization begins under a stated method. It can support water-glycol concentration assessment but does not describe inhibitor condition.

Glycol concentration

The proportion of glycol in a water-glycol mixture, reported on a stated basis. The basis and named product must be clear before comparison.

Human technical review

A controlled review in which an analyst separates measured facts, contextual inference and recommended next evidence before release.

ICP-OES / ICP-AES

Optical emission spectroscopy used to measure multiple elements. Its relevance and preparation route depend on the fluid matrix and analytical objective.

Immersion fluid

A dielectric heat-transfer fluid intended to contact electronic hardware in an immersion cooling system. Product class and OEM requirements shape the test panel.

Immersion program

Inhibitor package

A formulation of corrosion-control and supporting additives. Its condition cannot be inferred from glycol concentration alone.

Karl Fischer titration

A family of methods for quantifying water in suitable fluids, including oils and dielectric liquids. Results are method- and matrix-dependent.

Matrix

The fluid and material background in which an analyte is measured. Matrix differences can change method applicability, preparation and interpretation.

Method applicability

The documented fit between a method, fluid matrix, concentration range and intended decision. A familiar method number is not automatically suitable for every coolant.

Offline laboratory testing

Analysis performed on a controlled physical sample outside the operating loop. It complements online sensors by adding chemical and material-specific evidence.

Oxidation

Chemical change involving reaction with oxygen or related pathways. In oils it may be investigated through correlated acidity, viscosity and product-specific indicators.

Particle count

A measurement of particles by defined size bands or a reporting code. Sampling technique and fluid suitability strongly affect meaning.

PG25

Common application shorthand for a nominal 25% propylene-glycol/water coolant. It does not, by itself, define the product, concentration basis, inhibitor package or condition.

PG25 field note

pH

A measure related to acidity or alkalinity in an aqueous system. It is one correlated signal and should not be treated as a complete coolant-health verdict.

Quality-control sample

A blank, duplicate, check material or other control used to test whether an analytical run meets defined acceptance criteria.

Reserve alkalinity

A titration-based measure of alkaline reserve used for some coolant formulations. Product chemistry and baseline determine how a change should be read.

Sample point

The precisely identified physical location from which fluid is collected. Comparable trending requires consistent point, procedure and operating context.

Single-phase immersion

An immersion architecture in which the dielectric fluid remains liquid as it transports heat through circulation and heat exchange.

Trend baseline

A controlled reference series used to distinguish coherent condition change from normal product, sampling and analytical variation.

Turbidity

An optical measure of cloudiness or suspended material in a suitable liquid. It is a screening signal rather than a direct identification of the material present.

Viscosity

A fluid's resistance to flow under stated conditions. It can affect pumping, lubrication and heat-transfer behaviour, depending on the system.

Water content

The measured amount of water in a fluid under a stated method. Acceptable interpretation differs substantially between aqueous coolants, lubricants and dielectric fluids.

Use the term / preserve the context

A definition can orient the question. It cannot set the limit.

Acceptance limits and method applicability remain specific to the named fluid, system, OEM and analytical program.
